Raised by John Frances and Sarah, although actually was the son of Ivey Benjamin and and Mamie E. Wynn Charlie died December 12, 2004 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Charlie Rufus Newsome, Sr. March 16, 1919- December 12, 2004 PHENIX CITY, AL— Mr. Charlie Rufus Newsome, Sr., 85, of Phenix City, died Sunday, Dec. 12 at the Columbus Hospice House. Graveside funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 at Lakeview Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Toby Newsome officiating. The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stiffler-Hamby Mortuary, Phenix City Chapel. Mr. Newsome was born March 16, 1919 in Phenix City, Ala., son of Avey Newsome and Ella Mae Wynn Newsome. He was a member of the Golden Acres Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in the Phillipines during World War II. Mr. Newsome was a lifelong area resident and retired from the textile industry. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Claudia Mae Parson Newsome. Survivors include his son, Charlie R. Newsome, Jr., of Eclectic, Ala.; a daughter, Nancy Murphy of Atlanta; a sister, Beth Hand of Phenix City; two grandsons, David R. Newsome of Phenix City and Matthew Newsome of Birmingham, Ala.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Suzanne of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road., Columbus, 31904.
He married Claudia Mae Pasons December 24, 1940. Claudia was born May 5, 1919. Claudia was the daughter of James Thomas Parsons and Wrnie Hortense Patrick. Claudia died December 5, 2001 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Claudia is buried at Lakeview Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Charlie Rufus Newsome and Claudia Mae Pasons had the following children:
