Nolan died July 4, 2011 in Marion, Williamson Co., IL. OBIT: Nolan E. Bennett, 91, of rural Marion, passed away at 1 p.m. Monday, July 4, 2011, peacefully in his home with his daughter, Connie, by his side.
He was born Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1919, in Xenia, the son of Bart and Eva C. (Parrish) Bennett.
In 1937, he joined Civilian Conservation Corps, known as the "CCC," serving for about three years. After leaving the Corps, he returned home for a short time. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Fifth Medical Battalion, being stationed in Michigan, and later in Iceland. He later was reassigned to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., to assist in training the 37th Division for oversees duty. After their deployment, he was assigned with the paratroopers at Fort Lenard Wood until the end of the war in 1945. After his period of faithful service, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Nolan was united in marriage to Effie Novelenne Bailey on Oct. 13, 1941, in Hannibal, Mo., and together they shared nearly 47 years of marriage until her death July 26, 1988.
Early in his lifetime, his working career was in farming and construction in northern Illinois. In 1960, he returned to Southern Illinois and began his career in the fiberglass business. He began working with Mark Twain Boat Co. and later Claxton Fiberglass in product design. He later opened his own fiberglass business known as "Oskaloosa Glass," west of Marion, specializing in fiberglass manufacturing and repair. After being in business for 20-plus years, he closed the business in 1988.
He was of Baptist faith, attending many of the Baptist churches of the area and every day he read and studied his Bible during the evening.
In his spare time he enjoyed wood-working, spending time in the outdoors gardening, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by two daughters, Connie Bennett of Marion and Terry Serpico of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Smith of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Kender Crow and her husband, Dennis, of Murphysboro; two grandsons, Michael Rayner of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Eric Bennett and his wife, Deann of Herrin; five grandchildren, Seth Smith, Levi Smith and Rachel Smith, all of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Austin Bennett and Trent Bennett, both of Herrin; daughter-in-law, Ladonna Bennett of Herrin; sister, Doris Burgess of Henderson, Ky.; brother and sister-in-law, Wesley and Wanda Bennett of Henderson, Ky.; other extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Kenneth Bennett; grandson, Kevin Bennett and three sisters, Helen, Opal and Ima.
Arrangements for Nolan E. Bennett have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., of Marion.
He married Effie Novelenne Bailey October 13, 1941 in Hannibal, Marion Co, MO. Effie died July 26,1988.
Nolan Eugene Bennett and Effie Novelenne Bailey had the following children:
